Max Meyer was considered one of the greatest talents in Europe. Similar to Mario Götze, Toni Kroos, Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney and other world stars, he was voted best player of the U17 European championship when he was younger. However, he has not yet fulfilled his potential.
Max Meyer overshadowed by Leroy Sané & others
In the meantime, other players of the productive Knappenschmiede have made a bigger name for themselves than the 22-year-old. Sead Kolašinac (24) plays a good season at Arsenal and was previously on of the top performer at Schalke. Leroy Sané (21) was last voted the first German player (after Jürgen Klinsmann) to become Premier League player of the month. But Max Meyer is the one who stagnated in his development.
In summer 2017 his Schalke future looked shaky
A situation that aroused dissatisfaction in him. In summer, he was asked whether he would leave Schalke in the summer of 2018, as his contract expires and negotiations for a new contract came to nothing.
“That is what I also said before the U-21 European Championship that I do not accept the contract offer. That’s how we remained for now. So far, there have been no talks. So as it stands now, I’ll move as a free agent next year.”
“Everything else would be a lie now.” -Max Meyer.
Tedesco gave Meyer a ray of hope at Schalke
In the summer, a young coach, Domenico Tedesco (32), took over the helm at FC Schalke 04.
After initial criticism Tedesco managed to put a young team with a great spirit on the pitch. Max Meyer is an important member of this team. In the last five matches Meyer was on the field for the full 90 minutes. But not like his early days as an offensive player. Tedesco retrained the Schalker and let him run up in the defensive midfield. A role that Max Meyer seems to enjoy. All of a sudden, a new perspective was presented to him by his coach.
Max Meyer told SportBild:
“There’s a super atmosphere in the team. The coach can make players better. I have not felt this comfortable in such a long time”
Words that seemed impossible last summer. And who knows? Maybe there is a chance for Meyer and Schalke to have a future together.
