The rumors about a possible return of previous loan-player Abdul Rahman Baba (23) have been going on for some time. Now all signs are pointing to a return of the Ghanaian to the Bundesliga.
At the end of the Hinrunde Schalke sports director Christian Heidel did not rule out a return of the left-back. Back then, he said to kicker:
“I wouldn’t rule out that we deal with Baba in the winter”
Next step: Medical check
Now the winter transfer window is about to close and Schalke seem to finalize the deal. At the press conference on 25.01.2018 before the game against VfB Stuttgart, Heidel announced that Baba was on his way to the medical check at the Königsblauen.
At Schalke, however, it’s also clear that the player needs time to get back on track. But if the Ghanaian national player is able to get back to his old level, the player would be a major boost to Schalke’s squad. They were interested in a loan deal in summer but decided to refrain due to the extended downtime of Baba. Abdul Rahman Baba injured his cruciate ligament at the Africa Cup of Nations in January last year. Therefore, he was only able to play 21 games for Schalke 04 in which he scored one goal and made two assists.
Heidel: Baba needs time
Now he has been successfully rehabilitated and was able to gain match experience in the second team of Chelsea. But, the upcoming medical check-up is, of course, essential for a successful transfer.
Heidel: “Baba has got some minutes with the Chelsea reserves lately. We’ll give him the time he needs, but the medical will reveal more.”
It’s obvious that the player needs time to get back on track with Schalke.
Heidel: “[…] The deal is not complete yet.”
